South Theater

South Theater

Discover the rich history of the Jerash South Theater, an architectural marvel built during the reign of Emperor Domitian between 90-92 AD. This impressive structure was designed to accommodate over 3,000 spectators, showcasing the grandeur of Roman engineering.

The theater features a beautifully ornate stage that originally stood two stories high; today, the first level has been meticulously reconstructed and continues to host performances. One of its most fascinating aspects is its remarkable acoustics—speakers positioned at the center of the orchestra floor can be heard clearly throughout the entire auditorium without raising their voices, demonstrating advanced design techniques for its time.

Visitors can explore two vaulted passages leading into the orchestra area and four additional passages at the back that provide access to the upper rows of seats. Interestingly, some seating areas were reserved for prominent attendees, with Greek letters still visible today indicating these special spots.

The Jerash South Theater is not just a historical site; it’s a testament to ancient ingenuity and community gathering. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about ancient architecture, this theater offers a unique glimpse into Roman life in Jordan. Plan your visit today and step back in time!
